1. What Are the Minimum Age Requirements to Drive a Pontoon Boat?

Florida law requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to complete an approved boating safety course before operating a pontoon boat.

Requirements:

  • Born before January 1, 1988: No boating safety certificate required.

  • Born on or after January 1, 1988: You must present a valid boating safety certificate before your rental. You can complete the course at www.boat-ed.com.

  • Guests who do not meet the requirements may hire one of our approved captains.

2. How Are Island Life Pontoon Boats Different?

Most rental pontoons in the Destin area are approximately 23 feet long with 50 HP engines.

Island Life Pontoon offers premium luxury tritoons featuring:

  • 28–30 foot boats

  • 150 HP, 200 HP, 250 HP, 350 HP, and 425 HP models

  • Luxury construction valued from approximately $90,000–$120,000+

  • Smoother ride, faster speeds, and more comfortable seating

  • Double-decker tritoons with waterslides available

Our 350 HP and 425 HP boats require a captain, and we will provide a list of approved captains.

3. Where Can We Go During Our Rental?

Our boats can travel throughout the beautiful Choctawhatchee Bay between the 331 Bridge and Destin Harbor.

4. What's the Difference Between a Pontoon and a Tritoon?

A tritoon has three aluminum tubes instead of two, providing significant advantages:

  • Faster speeds

  • Smoother ride

  • Better handling

  • Greater stability

  • Higher weight capacity

  • More comfortable ride in choppy water

Once you've ridden on a tritoon, you'll immediately notice the difference.

5. Are Island Life Pontoon Boats Faster?

Yes.

Most standard rental pontoons travel approximately 8–12 MPH.

Our fleet offers:

  • 150 HP

  • 200 HP

  • 250 HP

  • 350 HP

  • 425 HP

Most of our boats cruise between 25–34 MPH, with our larger horsepower models capable of even greater speeds (captain required).

6. How Much Time Will We Save?

Many visitors staying on 30A drive about one hour each way to reach Crab Island.

Our convenient location allows many guests to reach our marina in 10–25 minutes, giving you:

  • Less driving

  • More time on the water

  • 6-hour and 9-hour rental options

Travel times on the water vary depending on weather, wind, current, and passenger load.

7. Where Can We Eat During Our Boat Rental?

You have several excellent options.

At Crab Island

Food vendors frequently visit boats offering:

  • Ice cream

  • Boiled peanuts

  • Pineapple and coconut treats

  • Snacks and beverages

There is also a floating restaurant.

Waterfront Restaurants

You can also visit numerous waterfront restaurants including:

  • Lulu's

  • Dewey Destin's

  • Restaurants throughout Destin Harbor

8. Do You Rent Floating Mats?

Yes.

Island Life Pontoon offers 18' x 6' floating mats.

Because winds can become strong on the bay, we do not recommend bringing lightweight inflatable floats that can easily blow away.

9. Is Crab Island Safe for Kids?

Yes.

Crab Island is extremely popular with families, especially during the morning and early afternoon.

For families with young children, we recommend visiting earlier in the day before the area becomes busier.

​

10. Are There Other Places Besides Crab Island?

Absolutely.

One of our favorite family destinations is the beautiful water just south of Crab Island near Okaloosa Island.

Guests often enjoy:

  • Anchoring

  • Swimming

  • Relaxing on the water

  • Playing near the shoreline

Please Note: Boats may anchor near the beach, but beaching the boat (driving onto the sand) is strictly prohibited.

11. What Is Your Cancellation Policy?

Standard Rentals

  • Sunday–Thursday: 14-day cancellation policy

  • Friday & Saturday: 4-week cancellation policy

  • Yacht Charters: 4-week cancellation policy

Reservations canceled outside these windows are eligible according to the policy in effect at booking.

We recommend purchasing travel insurance, as cancellations due to illness, travel delays, accidents, or other personal circumstances are generally not refundable.

Weather Policy

Island Life Pontoon always strives to provide the safest and best experience possible.

Because Florida weather changes quickly:

  • We only cancel and issue full refunds when the U.S. Coast Guard issues a Small Craft Advisory for the bay.

  • Passing rain showers do not qualify for refunds.

  • Weather decisions are typically made approximately one hour before departure.

  • We do not cancel due to cold weather.

  • We may adjust your departure time if weather conditions improve later in the day.

Weather forecasts are not always accurate, and conditions can change rapidly.

12. Should We Hire a Captain?

Many guests choose to hire a captain so they can simply relax and enjoy the day.

Benefits of Hiring a Captain

  • Stress-free experience

  • Local knowledge and guided tour

  • No navigation concerns

  • If damage is caused by the captain's operation, the guest is generally not responsible for those damages.

Captain Fees

Reservation Deposit:

  • $20/hour

Paid Directly to Captain:

  • $50/hour

Recommended Gratuity

Captains

  • 10–15%

  • Average: $125–175

Dock Hands

  • 5–10%

  • Average: $40–60

Dock hands assist with loading, unloading, cleaning, and preparing your boat.
